10 Ways to NOT Start in a D&D Tavern- Game Master Tips

Failed throws cause 1d6 non-lethal damage. Two opponents take turns in choosing and drinking one. The dude who gets the piss-beer loses.

Each can choose to increase the bet for the same amount. They choose to roll again 0,1,2,3,4 or 5 of their dice pool. The result of the second roll determines the winner.

There are no winners usually, only drunk people. I used these in my campaign, you can find the first reports here: If you'd like me to post about the City of Hileriath, where the tavern called Yokel Lighthouse is hosting these games, let me know in the comments.

Here's a post about puzzles and philosophy, somehow. I'll be running a one-shot at comic book shop soon and I'm starting my PC together by meeting a clandestine contact at a Gaming House.

I wanted some casino games so I looked at dice games from old Dragon Magazine articles and kitbashed them into my own built around the core of Slay the Dragon.

I just remembered that I typed up more of a bullet point summation of the rules for my campaign SlimWiki. Here's the more pithy and I hope, clearer version:.

The objective is to be the last Player to score an Attack Dice strike against the Dragon and win all the Silver Pieces in the pot. The results will range from 3 to This is how many Strikes are needed by Players to land a Killing Blow and also determines how many rounds until the Dragon wins the fight.

I play a variation of this where the minimum number of Dragon Hit Points and Rounds must always be equal to the number of Players so that every Player gets a turn.

Each Player must ante-up a single Silver Token into the pot to play the game. Play begins to Player 1, left from the Dealer. Player 1 Rolls 1 red d6 along with the green d Player 1 may add two additional red Attack Dice per Silver Token.

If the total on the red d6 or d6s is equal to or higher than the green d20, that Player scores a Strike against the Dragon.

Player 2 then goes. Player 2 rolls their single red d6 Attack Dice or may buy two additional red Attack d6s per Silver Token.

On their Turn, a Player may purchase additional red d6s to roll against the Dragon at a cost one Silver Token per 2 red d6s for that Turn.

The additional Silver Token goes into the pot. Players keep purchased red d6 Attack Dice until the end of the game. Thus, if you spend TWO Silver Tokens to get 4 additional red d6 Attack Dice on the first Round, you will continue to roll with those extra 4 additional red d6 Attack Dice until the game ends.

All players, other than the winner, must turn in their Silver Tokens to the Dealer at the end of the game. I have a couple of questions: Also, let's say the dragon has 6 Hit Points, and they have 6 rounds.

If there are 6 players, do they all get to roll only once? In this example, Player 4 lands a Strike vs the Dragon because his red d6 total of 6 is higher than the green d20 roll of 2.

Even though Player 3 rolled a higher number, his attack missed the dragon's roll. I thought about using a static number each round to simulate actual combat mechanics vs AC but I decided a random d20 roll each Turn would create more drama.

But if say there are 5 Players and everyone scores a Strike from the very start, the game would end in the 2nd Round, on the 6th Strike which means Player 1 of 5 slays the Dragon and wins the Pot.

Player 1 keeps rolling 1d6 and adding the results together to try to get as close as they can to 21 without going over they can choose to stop whenever they want.

Then, the NPC or Player 2 does the same and tries to get closer to 21 without going over. If they tie the player's number they can opt to push the bet to another round, or they can roll again to try to get closer to 21 but risk going over.

I've featured gambling on battling animals of various kinds. Giant stag beetles, minor demons, whatever. My DM busted out some playing cards and chips on us the other day.

Played some poker and he was fixing the NPCs hand with a second deck! Should have known better than to trust an orc gang leader!

Here are my favorite games: If you can't score any on a roll, you don't get any points that round, even if you already had some.

Everyone rolls a d Anyone with the same toll is out. Continues with d8, then d6, then d4. Remaining people after that split up the pot.

If everyone is out, the pot carries over into the next game. Maybe you already saw it, but a game called "Dragon's Hoard" was posted about a week ago.

It isn't quite what you're after, but I once had a tribe of barbarians who played a game where four of them would stand in a large marked open area.

Each would shoot an arrow straight up into the sky, and then they would try to catch the falling arrows using shields.

Anyone who didn't catch at least one was out of the game, anyone who caught two or more won automatically. I didn't make the rules any more complicated than that because the odds of two players catching two arrows each was so unlikely that it had probably never happened.

I was looking up some dice games for a quest just recently, so have this: My favorite is Deceit. Maybe isn't exactly what you're looking for but it could give you ideas.

Poker-Dice and Cee-Lo are actual games that you can use, which are simple enough to learn. Poker Dice is easy, roll 5d6 three times, keeping or rerolling any dice you want, with betting between rerolls.

This is a good tavern game. Cee-Lo is a bit more difficult, and good for casinos, or back-alley gambling. A banker offers a stake like gold , and players "Fade" that stake, which means they bet a portion say 20 gold each.

Each win gets them back their bet, plus their potion of the stake so it's a game where you double your money. Then, they roll off 3d6, banker first. These are the automatic losing rolls: These are the automatic winners: Otherwise, the banker will keep rolling until he gets a pair.

The dice not part of the pair so the 5 in , or 4 in , etc is the banker's "Point". The players then roll in the same manner, with automatic win or loss, or their own point.

If the player's point is greater than the bank's point, they win, if less they lose, and if tied no money exchanges hands.

But of course, what you should instead consider is how your PCs with Sleight of Hand and Stealth will try to manipulate these games, and how you'll allow for it.

Three-dragon ante, dragonchess, various card games poker, blackjack, hearts, whist , various dice games liar's dice, craps, yahtzee, dragon's hoard , snail racing, louse cup, and nine-men's morris,.

DnD submitted 1 year ago by AffanTorla. Want to add to the discussion? In that case, feel free to use Matt Mercer's rules for the game which is what I was basing the rules for Hand of Fate off of: The player bets any amount, chooses a number between 1 and 6.

The dealer than rolls 3d6. If one die matches the player's number, they get their money back plus an equal amount.

If three dice match the player's number, they get their money back plus triple the amount. Of course, if none of the dice match, the house keeps their money.

The great part about this game is it's very easy to reason as follows: Expected value to the player: But it sure seems like it's worth it, which is why it's a good game.

I think I might use this is I ever do someday. Someone check me here, it's just arithmetic but there's a lot of it.

Sorry, forgot what subreddit I was on. The dragonchess thing uses 5e rules. Darts You can definitely run this a lot more intricately, but I just make it a best 2 out of 3 ranged attack rolls with a dart.

Dice-Based Blackjack Players roll a d6 and d4 in the open, dealer rolls just the d6 in the open and keeps their d4 hidden. Dragonchess Two players see who gets best 2 out of 3 in a series of Intelligence Dragonchess , Wisdom Insight , and Charisma Deception checks.

So I'd say poker or blackjack are great casino games that are cheap to do. I'll probably be using that at some point.

Here are some of the tavern games I used in my campaign. Twenty-One Min 25 gp buy-in. A player rolls 2d The dealer does the same, keeping the first die hidden.

Each player, including the dealer, takes turns rolling any number of additional d10s. All die faces are face value, except for the 1, which can be worth 1 or If the dealer scores a 21, all players lose.

If a player scores a 21, they win. If both the dealer and a player score a 21, that player wins their bet back 1: Hand of Fate Min 50 gp buy-in.

A player rolls 1d12 and keeps their roll secret. Each player has the chance to raise the bet, call the bet, or fold.

This continues until all bets are equal. A d12 is then rolled which all players can see. Each player has a second chance to raise, call, or fold.

A second and final d12 is rolled and each player gets one last chance to raise, call, or fold. Once all bets are equal, all dice are revealed.

I'm not sure if I understand Hand of Fate correctly. The public dice will always have the same sum for every player so it only matters what you rolled with your own die.

So what did I get wrong? That does seem to be the case. Huh, I guess I never really considered that. I'm glad you brought that up. In that case, feel free to use Matt Mercer's rules for the game which is what I was basing the rules for Hand of Fate off of:.

Each card player rolls 1d8, keeping the die hidden. Each player has the chance to raise the bet, call the bet meet it , or fold.

It continues when all bets are equal. Then each player rolls a 1d6, keeping it secret as well. A final chance to raise, call, or fold.

Each remaining player rolls 1d4. They all reveal the 1d8, 1d6, and 1d4, adding them all together. This is of course incorrect; in fact the game favors the house very slightly, but it's a nice probability puzzle and might make a good casino game if you want the PCs to lose money, which would happen in a real casino.

But the fact that you can roll double or triple for more money makes it back to 50 right? So, on average, you expect to lose about a tenth of what you bet.

It's close to being a fair game, but with a large enough scale the house can win an appreciable amount. There are 3 six-sided dice, so there are ways they can come up.

Let's say, for example, that you chose the number 1. Given that triples give you triple your money, doubles give you double, and singles give you even payback, you have.

Where P is the average payoff of a given roll as a proportion of the bet. You can definitely run this a lot more intricately, but I just make it a best 2 out of 3 ranged attack rolls with a dart.

Best 2 out of 3, higher rolls win. You could even add up the results of all 3 rolls and compare to the sum of all other players.

Players roll a d6 and d4 in the open, dealer rolls just the d6 in the open and keeps their d4 hidden. You can hit by rolling additional d4s, but if your total is greater than 10, you bust.

Two players see who gets best 2 out of 3 in a series of Intelligence Dragonchess , Wisdom Insight , and Charisma Deception checks.

I like this one because you can actually put proficiency in a gaming set to use. My DM busted out some playing cards and chips on us the other day.
